In 1971, G. C. Tillage Co. was established. For 5 years, the 'Big Ox' and 'Big Beaver' rippers and the 'Hutchmaster' offset were imported. In 1976, arrangements were made to manufacture these items in South Africa. Improvements were made to suit South African conditions and other sizes were designed, resulting in the current life of 'Wichita', 'Pioneer', and 'Hutchmaster' offset harrows in sizes 1,83m to 6.08m. The 'Big Beaver' and 'Big Ox' were also made stronger than the originals.
The only imported component used today is a special 'Fafnir' bearing for the line of trailed harrows, which has given outstanding performance in the field.
New items have been added to the range, such as Dam Scoops, Potato Ridgers, Slashers, Chisel ploughs, Inter-row maize cultivators, Tandem Disc Harrows and Grader Blades.
The company sold the line of 'Imco Rome' harrows, built in the then Rhodesia, for the first few years. Spares are available for these units today to serve the farmers who bought them in the early years.
Kemper maize harvesters have been imported since the early days of the Company. Spares for 'Bomford' dozers and 'Jean de Bru' harrows are kept in stock.
The company has two very important policies. Firstly, any improvements made to a unit must be done in such a way that any farmer with an old unit can update his implement without any special equipment or welding required.
Secondly, since the Company is the manufacturer, an extraordinarily large amount of spares are kept on hand, and it is a firm policy to never say "no" to a spares request.
